There are three simple steps to switch to a retailer.

Step 1:

Shop around and check out the price plans that retailers have to offer. You can compare the standard price plans on https://compare.openelectricitymarket.sg to find one that best meets your needs.

Step 2:

Contact your preferred retailer and ask for more information on the price plan you are interested in. Look out for contractual terms such as contract duration, payment terms, security deposit, early termination charges and auto-renewal clauses.

Step 3:

Sign up with your preferred retailer, who will then work directly with SP Group to perform the switch for you.

As a business consumer, you will need to install an advanced meter (also known as a smart meter) if you switch to a retailer. Your contract can start only after your advanced meter is installed by SP Group, which typically takes up to 1 month. SP Group will continue to supply electricity to you at the regulated tariff until you have completed your switch.

The documents required for commercial accounts under UEN are

• Application for Contestability Status
• Business Profile/ACRA
• Letter of Authorisation (Applicable only if signatory in the application form is not listed in the Business Profile/ACRA)

The documents required for commercial accounts under NRIC are

• Application for Contestability Status
• Copy of account holder's NRIC

The contract with your retailer can only start after your advanced meter is installed by SP Group, which typically takes up to 1 month.

You will receive a notification from SP Group about the switch (via letter, email and/or SMS). Please check with your retailer if you did not receive the notification.

Electricity retailers can provide packages with different price plans and services to suit differing usage patterns. Apart from the price, you should consider how and when you will be billed, whether a security deposit is required, as well as the length of contract and penalties for early termination, if any.

If you buy from the wholesale electricity market, you will pay for electricity at prices that vary every half-hour. This option is riskier as you will face price fluctuations.

SP Group does not impose any fees on consumers for switching to a retailer.

You can do so but you are advised to check the terms and conditions of your current contract to determine if there are any costs, and other terms and conditions associated with switching to another retailer (e.g. early termination charge).

Your current retailer is required to notify you at least 10 business days before your contract expires. You can then choose one of these options:

• Re-contract with your retailer
• Switch to a new retailer
• Switch back to SP Group at the regulated tariff (if your average monthly consumption is less than 4,000 kWh)

Only businesses with an aggregated average monthly consumption of less than 4,000 kWh calculated across all its active accounts (contestable and non-contestable) registered under the same account holder are allowed to switch back to buying electricity from SP Group at the regulated tariff. 

The aggregated average monthly consumption is calculated based on the account(s) consumption over a continuous period of the past 12 months. If the account is opened for less than 12 months, then the consumption used for calculation will be for the period for which the account has been opened. 

Please check with your retailer if there are any early termination fee or auto-renewal clauses. 

There will be no disruption to your electricity supply when you switch electricity suppliers.

If you opt to install an advanced meter, there will be a temporary supply disruption of up to 30 minutes while SP Group is changing your meter.

Please inform SP Group in advance if you are not able to be present and make another appointment for meter installation.

SP Group will not install the meter unless you are present.

Contestability applications for normal metered accounts and master metered accounts will be approved within 2 business days and 1 month respectively. This does not include the time needed to install or replace any metering equipment.

If the combined average monthly electricity consumption for all your accounts exceeds 2,000 kWh, you can switch to any electricity retailer. If the combined average monthly electricity consumption for your accounts is less than 2,000 kWh, you can switch to any of the retailers participating in the Open Electricity Market.

You can choose to sign up with different retailers for your different business accounts.
